2022 Jim Shanks

Jim Shanks, born in 1956, is the son of Frank Amos and Eva Lou Shanks, both life-long Carroll County residents. He has two older brothers Jeff and Randy, younger sister Barb and brother Dan, and wife Mary Beth Shriver Shanks. Life has blessed Jim with two sons, Troy (Melissa) live in San Marcos California and Mark (Ashley) live in Mooresville North Carolina. He also has two stepsons, Matt Miller (Libby) in Indianapolis, Ben Miller(deceased) and 5 grandchildren.

Jim started working on the farm at a young age cleaning farrowing stalls and during summer months baling hay and straw for area farmers. He graduated from Delphi high school in 1974 and attended the ag short course at Purdue that winter. Jim then returned to help on the family farm as well as working for Eldon and Wilma Robeson building grain bins.
The opportunity to start farming full time happened in 1979 with his dad. In 1992 Shanks Bros. partnership was entered into with brother Dan. The late George Ringer, a close friend and neighbor, was instrumental in mentoring the brothers. February 2001 Shanks Bros became contract growers for TDM farms of North Carolina when pigs went into the first 4000 head (quad) barn built in the county.
The Shanks farm has continued to grow and improve over the years, and the future looks promising with nephew Adam recently joining the family farming operation full time. Jim is grateful to have farmed with four generations of his family!
Jim has participated in Pork Producers and the Ag Association for many years and served 9 years on the FSA county committee. He served on the Jackson Township advisory board for several years, was Jackson township park board president, and also helped coach basketball at the middle school level. While farming has been his passion, Jim also enjoys reading, golf and being a part of the Shanks Bros(Deere-lirious) tractor pulling team
