Jerry Hendress
Born on April 20, 1949, to Albert and Lois Hendress of Wolcott, Jerry Hendress graduated from Wolcott High School in 1967. He headed south to Purdue University to study biology education. While there, he was a member of Acacia Fraternity and received his bacholor’s degree in 1971.
His first job was teaching seventh grade science at Battle Ground Middle School. From 1972 to 1974, Hendress taught freshman honors biology and coached basketball at Benton Central High School.
He married Mara Bowman in 1971, and they have two children, Jason Hendress, a Purdue graduate who works in the aviation industry in Denver, Colo. for Jeppesen, a divison of Boeing. Their daughter’s name is Lindsey, and she is also a Purdue graduate, and works for Eli Lilly in pharmaceutical sales.
In 1974, Hendress moved to Carroll County to farm with his father-in-law, Leo Bowman. In 1975, he started a 120-sow, farrow-to-finish operation. While raising hogs, he was active in improving the quality of his breeding stock, and he participated in and won several awards for the quality of hogs he raised. He continued to farm and raise hogs until 1986, when he took a job in feed sales for Excel Co op. He is presently the customer relationship and career path development manager for Excel Co-op.
Hendress has always been very community-minded, said Nichols. “He has served as an officer for the Purdue Club of Carroll County, as a director for Salin Bank, and as a director for Carroll County Farm Bureau Co-op. He is a past president of the Carroll County Pork Producers, and serves as the main announcer for several events at the Carroll County 4 H Fair, such as the queen contest and livestock auction.”
Jerry and Mara opened their home for Russian swine farmers who were visiting Carroll County a few years ago, and have hosted an exchange student, as well. In addition, Jerry participates in several career day programs at local high schools, and is presently serving on the Carroll County Council.
He enjoys raising beef cattle, attending Purdue football games, and helping and working with young people. He also enjoys traveling with his wife and spending weekends on Lake Freeman. Jerry said he loves Carroll County, and says it is a great place to live and raise a family.
