Everett E. Gruber

Everett E. Gruber was born on December 19, 1919. He grew up in Tippecanoe Township and went to grade school in Pittsburg and graduated from Delphi High School in 1937. He enrolled in the Ag School at Purdue University on a Sears and Robuck Scholarship and graduated in 1941.

Everett and his wife, Cleone, were married on November 2, 1940. They have three children: Judy Svegliato, Shore Acres, Texas; Janice Przonek, Snow Mass, Colorado; and Larry Gruber, Delphi, Indiana. They also have 8 grand children.

Everett always dreamed of flying and while at Purdue, he learned to fly in1939. He instructed primary flight in Albany, Georgia, 1942 to 1945, to royal airforce pilots and U.S. airforce pilots.

Everett and Trans World Airlines joined forces in 1945 where he flew the military air transport command for one year and then he flew the Trans World International and Domestic routes until retiring in 1979. Everett and Cleone were able to see a lot of this world as they were stationed in Washington, D.C.; Chicago, Illinois; Rome, Italy; Detroit, Michigan; and for around 30 years in New York- Long Island.

Since returning to Carroll County after his retirement, Everett has been cutting a very wide swath. He is active in the Carroll County Wabash and Erie Canal Association, the County Historical Society, the State Canal Association, and the Canal’s bridge restoration project.

Everett was a 4-H member while growing up and later was a member of the Tipwa Grange in Pittsburg. He also holds memberships in the Purdue Alumni Association, P.U. Presidents Council, and the John Purdue Club.

Carroll County has benefited significantly since Everett and Cleone came home to retire and become active members of the community.
