Fred Wise

Wise was born in 1948 and graduated from Delphi High School in 1966. He and Linda Welk were married in 1968 and they started farming with Fred’s family. In 1969, they farmed approximately 180 acres of rented ground and bough 300 feeder pigs to raise on a dirt lot in an old barn. In 1976 due to high feeder pig prices, Wise decided to start farrowing his own pigs.

From that time on, tings started to grow with the hogs ad grain farming. The family now has approximately 4600 sows and farms 4800 acres.

Wise loves agriculture and all the challenges involved. In 1984 he was named Indiana Outstanding Pork Producer by the Indiana Pork Producers Association. In 1988 the Wises hosted the Indiana Farm Management Tour. In 1992 he and his wife were named Master Farmers by Indiana Prairie Farmer.

Wise has always been one to give back to the community as he is involved with the Carroll county Pork Producers and has served as its secretary since 1982. He is a member of the Area Plan Commission, and has served as the weighmaster for the Carroll County 4H Swine Show for several years.

He has served the national Pork Producers Council by his involvement with the Swine Health Committee. The Wises hosted the Russian Swine Delegation in 1997 and have opened their home and farm to several foreign tours during the past 20 years. He is a member of the Indiana Farm Bureau and Select Seed Hybrids Sales Group.

The Wises have two children, Jeff and Joan. Jeff and his wife, Arlene, and Joan and her husband Mark Abbott are all involved in farming. They have four grandchildren.

Wise is a member of the Pyrmont Church of the Brethren where he was a past trustee and now serves as deacon.
