1997 Fred Martin
FRED MARTIN
Fred was born November 10, 1920 in Carroll county. He attended grade school at North Central and graduated from Deer Creek in Washington Township in 1939.
Fred helped his father and brother on the farm until he joined the U.S. Navy in 1942 and served in the Pacific until he was discharged in 1945. Fred and Martha Rush were married in 1944. They had 5 children; Craig, Kenneth (deceased), Vicky Coppock, Mark and Marcia Maple. They also have 13 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.
Following his return from the service, Fred started farming in Washington Township where he established his family farm. Fred has been very involved with community activities during his lifetime and has always felt the need to serve his community. He has served on the Advisory Board in Washington Township. He served 2 terms on the SWCD Board as well as two terms as a Carroll County Councilman. Fred was also active in the Carroll county community Development Study Committee.
Fred served 12 years on the Carroll School Board and many of these years were when some very difficult and important decisions had to be made in regards to the direction their corporation would take. Fred is a member of the Deer Creek Presbyterian Church and he has served his church as an Elder.
Fred has been active with the 4-H programs in Carroll county and served on the swine committee and helped weigh pigs for many years. Fred always supported 4-H clubwork and felt it helped keep young people busy and guided them toward a more happy, healthy life. Most of Fred’s life was spent in Washington Township operating their family farm. After semi-retiring, Fred has still kept involved in the hog and grain operations.
Fred and Martha enjoy wintering in Florida and Fred still likes to get out and hit the golf ball when the opportunity arises.
