They have 3 sons; Charles, Mark, and John, and seven grandchildren and 1 great grandson.

Nelson has devoted a large portion of his life to service for Carroll County. He has been very active in the Delphi Presbyterian Church where he has served as Deacon & Elder. Nelson has been a member of the IOOF Lodge since he was 18 years old. He is presently serving on the Advisory Board of Farm Credit Services and he was the Township Director for Deer Creek Township to the Carroll County Pork Producers for over 20 years. He has served on the Extension Board and was instrumental in hiring some of the past Extension Agents for Carroll County.

Nelson and Pearl have farmed and raised hogs all their married life until the hogs left in 1995.
