JOHN C. PETERSON

John Peterson was born, raised, and still lives on the family farm north of Delphi which was operated by his parents, Wm. Frank and Catherine Heiny Peterson. John graduated from Purdue University in Agricultural Economics, and served one year on the Ag. Economics Extension staff. While at Purdue he met a charming co-ed, Doris Christenson, and they were married in 1938. For 46 years, until her death in 1984, they helped operate the farm and were involved in many activities. Some of which were Farm Bureau, 4-H and Extension committees, and many church and school activities. They were active in the Historical Society and Rural Youth. They chaired the committee representing the ten churches which fed the 85,000 people who were at the second annual Prairie Farmer – WLS Farm Progress Show on the Miles Martin farm in 1954.

Their children, Carolyn and David, were active in 4-H, church and school projects and both graduated from Purdue University. John was very involved with Carroll County Farm Bureau, and the Extension Committee. He helped organize Carroll County and Indiana Rural Youth, and was the first director from this district for the State Organization. John was chairman of the Carroll County Sesquicentennial Committee in 1966 to help Indiana celebrate the first 150 years as a State.

John has been very involved with the Carroll County Area Plan Commission since it began in 1971. He helped organize the Carroll County REMe, as an Incorporator, Director, and Secretary-Treasurer. In 1962 he went on a People to People trip to Russia and other countries in Europe. He has taken 17 major trips and visited 44 foreign countries. He took more than 8,000 pictures on the trips, and has presented about 200 colored slide shows.

After collecting information for several years, in 1980 John and Doris published their book “CARROLL COUNTY INDIANA RURAL ORGANIZATIONS”
