J.V. PICKART
Jean V. Pickart was born in 1919 in Gary, Indiana. He graduated from Purdue University in Electrical Engineering in 1942 and married his wife, Ann Wickard in 1943. J.V. and Ann have 3 children; Bill pickart and Sally Anderson, who reside and work at Fairacre Farms, and Jane pickart, who lives in Atlanta, Georgia. All three children graduated from Purdue University.
J.V. worked for General Motors Electromotive Division and Maritime Commission and was in the U.S. Navy from November 1942 – January 1946.
J.V. and Ann came to Carroll County and Fairacre Farms in January of 1946.
He has always been one of the most innovative farmers in the county. He was an innovator in silage techniques, utilizing his own invention to add sodium metabisulfite preservative to silage in large plastic covered storage piles. He was one of the first to go to 30″ rows and one of the first to build a totally confined, slatted floor, farrowing barn. He was one of the first to raise “hybrid” hogs such as Minnesota hybrids. When they started drying corn artificially, J.V. was one of the first to add vitamin A to on-farm developed swine rations. He was also an early adopter of vitamins E and Selenium in the swine rations.
J.V. was active in several organizations such as the Indiana Crop Improvement Association, Dairy Herd Improvement Association, Carrollton Township Advisory Board, Indiana Grasslands Council, Camden Lions Club, 32nd Degree Mason, Scottish Rite, and Elks.
