DOROTHY MILLS
Dorothy Newell Mills was born and raised in Carroll County and graduated from Delphi High School in 1948. She went to Purdue University and graduated in 1952 with a degree in Home Economics.
She and her husband Bob, were married in 1950. Dorothy taught for 3 years in the public schools of Carroll County and gave piano lessons in her home for 30 years. She worked for 2 years as the program assistant in charge of Home Economics for the Carroll County Extension Service.
She and Bob have 4 children; Deborah Barker – a music teacher for Tri-County Schools, Marsha Oilar – school nurse for Delphi Community Schools, Lois Anderson – a kindergarten teacher in Columbus, Indiana, and Mark, a farmer with Mills farming operation.
Dorothy is an unbelievable bundle of energy, and she utilizes it by being involved in several community projects. One of her trademark programs is the Homemakers Club. This is a group of welfare mothers who Dorothy has taken under her wings to nurture and give them self esteem. She conducts monthly meetings with the girls on various subjects and truly shows them a ray of light. Dorothy is also involved in Reach to Recovery for the American Cancer Society, the Delphi Public Library Board, Step Ahead, Headstart, and Delphi task-force on Education. She has also been involved with teaching classes in English and Math for persons in Carroll County who are striving to receive their GED.
Dorothy has recently received several well deserved awards including the Samuel Milroy “Delphi outstanding citizen Award”, plus many others.
She and Bob will be receiving the Indiana Prairie Farmer – Master Farmer Award this week in Indianapolis. She is a devout Christian lady who has set a goal to make this world a better place to live and raise a family.
