1994 Bud Harmon
DR. BUD G. HARMON
Bud was born in Camden in 1931 and spent most of his youth in Deer Creek. He graduated from high school in 1949. with the outbreak of the Korean War, Bud joined the Navy in 1951 and served most of the next four years on the Pacific Ocean. After service, he entered Purdue University and was awarded a B.S. degree in Animal Science in 1958. He continued his education at Michigan State University graduating with a PhD. degree in Animal Nutrition in 1962.
Bud accepted an appointment as Assistant Professor of Animal Sciences at the University of Illinois. Over the next 13 years, Bud taught nutrition and swine production while conducting research in swine nutrition. He published more than 90 research publications focusing primarily on amino acid nutrition. He was named Outstanding Teacher in the School of Agriculture in 1968. At Illinois, he served as Advisor for 11 graduate students and attained the rank of Full Professor in 1975.
Dr. Harmon joined Ralston Purina in st. Louis, Missouri as Director of Swine Nutrition in 1975 where he and his staff were responsible for feed and nutrition research and development for
products world-wide.
Bud returned to Purdue in 1986 to assume the role, Head of the Department of Animal Sciences a position he still serves. As a result of involvement in animal agriculture, Bud has had the opportunity to travel and work in 30 other countries to help them by consulting and teaching. Recently, Bud served as the only American on a European Task Force devising Research Strategy for Animal Production in the 21st Century focusing on unique problems of the emerging democracies in Eastern Europe. Presently, Dr. Harmon serves as President of the 7000 member American Society of Animal Science.
Bud and Mary Lynne have a son, two daughters and three grandchildren.
