1994 Bob Ayres

ROBERT D. AYRES

Robert Ayres was born in 1915 on a farm near Bringhurst. In 1937, he married Mary Susan Toler from Burlington and began their dairy operation. Nine years later, they purchased an 80-acre farm in Democrat Township where they currently reside. Bob farmed with his two sons and milked up to 170 Holstein cows. The dairy was sold in 1991.

Today, semi-retired, Bob farms 840 acres with his youngest son and grows corn, soybeans, alfalfa, popcorn and seed corn and beans. They also raise 500 – 600 replacement Holsteins annually.

Bob’s community activities represent a combined total of 134 years of service. He served on the Carroll County Area Plan Commission for 15 years; the Carroll County Farm Bureau Co-op Board of Directors for 31 years and as its secretary for 27 years. Bob spent 20 years on the School Board for the Carroll Consolidated School Corporation and served as secretary and president. He was one of the leaders responsible for consolidating five townships into one school system and for the
construction of the school campus.

Bob is a member and Elder of the Cutler Presbyterian Church. He taught Sunday School for 45 years there and at the Bringhurst Methodist Church.

Bob and Mary have four children, 10 grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren.

Bob’s credo is:
When the One Great Scorer comes
to write about your name,
He writes not whether you won or lost,
but how you played the game.
