Abandoned Water Well – Cost Share Program Available
Over the years, many water wells around old farmsteads have been left abandoned and unused. Water wells are a direct conduit between the land surface and the groundwater resource. Herbicides, pesticides, fertilizers, animal and human waste can all enter an abandoned well and potentially into our drinking water source. They also can pose a safety hazard especially for children.
The Carroll County Soil and Water Conservation District will provide assistance to landowners with the closure of abandoned water wells. The conservation district will provide cost-share at a rate of 75% of actual costs (up to $500.00 per well). All plugging activities must be conducted by a licensed well driller. These program funds are limited to total cost share of $ 1500 per calendar year, and application will be approved on a first come first serve basis.
