Steve was born in Rensselaer, Indiana the younger son of Bruce and Maurine Ashby. He grew up on a grain and livestock farm in Gilboa Township in Benton County. Steve was active in 4-H and FFA and graduated in the first class of Tri-County High School.
After high school, Steve graduated in 1965 with a BS in Industrial Arts from Ball State Teachers College. He received an MS in Industrial Arts from Purdue in 1972 and completed additional related courses.
Steve and his wife Sharon reside in Jackson Township on land that Sharon’s grandfather had owned.
The Ashbys have two children. Stephanie (Henry Olsen) lives in Davenport, Iowa, and has three sons. Shawn (Rusty) resides north of Camden and has a son and daughter.
Steve began teaching at Carroll High School in 1965. He continued helping on the family farm in Gilboa Township and started farming in Jackson Township in 1974. Steve retired from teaching in 2000 after spending 35 years at Carroll High School and devoted more time to farming. While teaching he served on several school-related committees. He had two students who won the Plymouth Trouble Shooting Contest for the state of Indiana in 1988 and were able to go to Washington, DC to compete in the Nationals. One year he was Carroll’s Teacher of the Year. Steve has enjoyed watching former students succeed in Agriculture and Ag related businesses in the area.
Ashby has served on the Carroll County Council and Flora Airport Board. For many years he has been the Contract Officer for the Bachelor Run Conservancy District since 1984. He served 4 years on the Carroll County Council. Steve has been a member of the Carroll County Transportation Committee and the Hoosier Heartland Committee.
Steve enjoys his family, flying, riding motorcycles on long trips, racing motorcycles at the Bonneville Salt Flats, riding 4 wheelers at the sand hills in California and watching other forms of racing.
