Carroll County Agri-Business Tour June 18

The Carroll County Chamber of Commerce and the Carroll County Agriculture Association are hosting a Carroll County Agri-Business Tour on June 18.

This is a great opportunity to see firsthand the inner-workings of three agribusinesses and learn more about the tremendous impact agriculture has in Carroll County.

You will visit three local farms and experience swine production, grain operations/technology, and specialty crops (popcorn & tomatoes). Meal provided at the end of the tour, prepared and served by the local FFA and Carroll County Agriculture Association.

Cost is $10 per person and will be donated to our local FFA Chapters.

Join Purdue Extension and Soil and Water Conservation for a Pasture Walk on June 13, from 9 – 11 a.m.

Your hosts are Blaine Brubaker & Angie Kingery

Location: 650 W 150 N, Flora, Indiana (Follow the signs)

Dr. Keith Johnson, Purdue Extension Forage Specialist, will address pasture renovation, over-seeding, and fertility issues. Dr. Johnson will also discuss recommendations for pastures based on soil test results. Susannah Hinds, Natu-ral Resource Conservation Service Grazing Specialist will address conservation practices for livestock producers.

The workshop is free. Water and snacks will be provided.

The Carroll FFA Awards Banquet will be held on Wednesday, May 8, 2013. Dinner begins at 6:30 and is a carry in, meat and drinks will be provided. Dr. Larry Gossen from the National FFA Organization will be speaking about career opportunities in the ag. sector and how they are growing.

The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) is at it again, attacking the agriculture industry in the name of animal welfare with misinformation and strong-arm tactics. The current target is the egg industry, but it’s clear that HSUS is positioning to migrate to all livestock industries. Please take a moment to read the “Call to Action” from INPAC, your Indiana Pork Political Action Committee – call your federal legislators to put a stop to HSUS goal of ending livestock farming.

For the second year in a row, the Monsanto Fund is gearing-up to invest $2.3 million to strengthen math and science education in rural communities through America’s Farmers Grow Rural Education^SM. Now until April 15, 2013, farmers can nominate their favorite, local public school district. Administrators of nominated school districts can then submit grant applications through April 30, 2013 to enhance their math and/or science programs.

Carroll County Agriculture Hall of Fame Banquet

Close to 120 people attended the 5th Annual Carroll County Agriculture Hall of Fame Banquet and Annual Meeting. We enjoyed a meal catered by Burlington Meats. New Board Members Doug Mears, Brenton Peters and Raymon Eikenberry were unanimously elected for their first term. Spencer Morris, from Indiana Pork presented information about farm security in light of predatory anti-farming groups.

Thomas Flora and Monty Edging were inducted as the 2013 Hall Fame individual honorees, and Hog Slat/TDM Farms was awarded the 2013 Business Hall of Fame honor. More information about each of this year’s inductees is available under the “Hall of Fame” tab above. 2013 Scholarship Winners were Brooke Beale and Brent Mears.

The Carroll County Agriculture Association is compiling an inventory of equipment which can be available in the case of an agriculture or other emergency. If you are willing to be included in this database, please print, complete, and mail the response form to the Ag Association (Address on the form). This information will be provide to First Responder Groups in Carroll County.

IRS Waives March 1 Farmer Tax Filing Date for 2013

Under the IRS guidance to be issued, farmers or fishermen who miss the March 1 deadline will not be subject to the penalty if they file and pay by April 15, 2013. Farmers requesting this penalty waiver must attach Form 2210-F to their tax return. Forms, instructions and other tax assistance are available on IRS.gov.
